So… what exactly is sake?
Sake is Japan’s traditional fermented rice beverage, crafted through a brewing process that shares similarities with both beer and wine. At its core, sake is made from just a few ingredients: rice, water, yeast, and kōji — a special mold that converts rice starches into fermentable sugars. The result can range from crisp and mineral-driven to floral, savory, silky, earthy, or wildly aromatic. Some styles drink beautifully chilled, while others shine slightly warmed. Like wine, sake reflects place, producer philosophy, rice variety, and craftsmanship.
Kome Collective is a modern sake importer dedicated to bringing authentic, small-production Japanese sake to the United States. Their portfolio focuses on producers who honor regional traditions while crafting expressive, nuanced sake that pairs beautifully with food and invites conversation. Kome Collective has become known for introducing Americans to a side of sake far beyond the typical hot sake many people first encounter — showcasing the incredible diversity, elegance, and craftsmanship of Japan’s brewing culture.
