Where music, art and people come to play

Katherine Hughes / Kent Wehman / Ken Haebich / Neal Wehman

Celebrate Valentine’s month with your sweetheart and this amazing group of musicians—traditional Valentine’s tunes like Rodgers and Hart’s “My Funny Valentine” will be interspersed with fun tangos by Astor Piazolla and more!

The AcrossTheBoard Quartet is jazz-based, but also plays a range of music, as their name implies. The group came together through an annual Concert for Peace curated by violinist Katherine Hughes. Katherine is a versatile musician who is known for performing a wide variety of styles—classical, pop, jazz, folk. She has appeared on concert stages, in the orchestra pits of operas and Broadway musicals, on many recordings, and in numerous television productions as well. Kent Wehman has been an active freelance pianist in the Chicago area for the past forty years. He has performed with many types of groups playing jazz, pop, dance, and classical music in clubs, hotels, restaurants, and churches. Bassist Ken Haebich began his professional music career at age 13. He is currently a Professional Musician, Bassist, Composer, and Educator. Neal Wehman has been a top call freelance drummer in the Chicagoland area since 2007.  He has been hired to play for the PBS special “Chicago Voices” featuring artists Renee Fleming, Kurt Elling, and John Prine.  He was also a drummer for the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” in Chicago. Together they perform an appealing repertoire that draws on their varied experience.

Cynthia Von Orthal, Puppet Designer

Award winning puppet designer, Cynthia Von Orthal is also an actress, writer, and director who has performed at many theaters across the county and in Europe.  Her own company, Von Orthal Puppets, has designed puppets and masks for several productions for Chicago's theatre and ballet scene including Joffrey Ballet and Goodman Theater.  Ms. Von Orthal has produced an original all puppet musical, Akuba's Dream, which she wrote with her husband, composer Paul Mertens of Poi Dog Pondering.  She has appeared on Roseanne and in the film A League of Their Own.  You can learn more about her at www.vonorthalpuppets.com.

Rendezvous Arts

Our Story

In the spring of 2020, a group of artists came together to discuss the new reality of performing arts during the COVID-19 pandemic—and how they could share the joys of music, art and more with people in a time when they needed it most. Our vision: people from every community directly connected to the arts, their lives enriched by personal interaction with artists, musicians, and each other.

Rendezvous Arts brings music, art and people together to encourage conversations and connections that contribute to people’s lives. We host social, interactive performances that create an atmosphere of one-on-one engagement at the intersection of music and art. In returning to the symphony orchestra’s more intimate roots—chamber music—we share our insights with audiences, giving them an artist’s perspective into what they hear and see. We firmly believe in “something for everyone,” so we strive to provide unique, diverse experiences that help individuals build lifelong relationships with the arts.
