Join members of the Article III Coalition, a bipartisan group of former federal judges, for a timely discussion on why an independent judiciary, the separation of powers, and the rule of law are essential to American democracy. Drawing on decades of judicial experience, the panel will explore the courts' constitutional role and the challenges facing judicial independence today.
Panelists
Judge John W. Bissell (Ret.) – Former Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey; appointed by President Reagan. Following more than two decades on the federal bench, he served as counsel, mediator, arbitrator, and legal author.
Judge Bernice B. Donald (Ret.) – Former Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; the first African American woman to serve on the Tennessee Supreme Court and later appointed to the Sixth Circuit by President Obama.
Judge Paul R. Michel (Ret.) – Former Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; appointed by President Reagan and a leading voice on judicial independence and intellectual property law.
Moderator
Mike Schaengold – Executive Director of the Article III Coalition and a nationally recognized appellate and government contracts attorney who has served on advisory councils to the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
