Viy (1967) is often referred to as a Russian or Soviet film, made during a period when Ukraine was under Soviet control. However, the story at its heart is deeply Ukrainian. Nikolai Gogol, the writer whose tale inspired the film, was born and raised in Ukraine, and he drew directly on Ukrainian folklore, language, and cultural traditions to shape the eerie, mythic world of Viy.
