Description

The turbulent years leading up to the American Revolution were marked by political division that pitted citizen against citizen. The turmoil was inescapable, and colonists were forced towards a moment of personal decision that would shape the rest of their lives. The stories of those who remained steadfast in their allegiance to the King are often forgotten in the annals of history, but they were an integral part of the struggle for Independence.

This tour highlights two of the most wealthy and unfaltering loyalists in southern Maine—Jonathan Sayward and Sir William Pepperell—as well as those ordinary citizens of York who were deeply attached to England and feared the consequences of violence and separation. For the loyalists, England was their home country and all its traditions—religiously, politically and socially—informed their culture and way of life. The tide of history was to sweep over them, however, and what happened to these individuals in the aftermath of the Revolution is a fascinating chapter in American history.
