Hey, Atlanta, ever notice things on your walk that pique your interest?

Create a woven portrait of Atlanta, using found objects and materials that capture the essence of the city! Join local mixed-media fiber artist Amanda Banks, creator of walking/weaving: portrait of a place and time (pictured above), for a hands-on afternoon inspired by our Threads of Change workshop series. Perfect for all skill levels, this workshop combines a guided walk through Atlanta with creative exploration.

How It Works:

  • Discover the city’s stories: Take a guided walk through Atlanta, observing the sights, sounds, and textures of your environment.
  • Collect meaningful materials: Gather unique objects from your surroundings—textures, colors, and shapes that inspire you.
  • Create your artwork: Weave these found materials into your own one-of-a-kind portrait of Atlanta, guided by Amanda’s expertise and insights.
  • Learn from the artist: Enjoy an inspiring talk from Amanda about her creative process and her walking/weaving project.

By the end of the afternoon, you’ll leave with a completed woven artwork that tells your story of Atlanta and fresh ideas for combining creativity with your environment.

About Amanda Banks

Amanda Banks is a self-taught mixed-media fiber artist residing and practicing in North Georgia, where the immediate rural landscapes provide a source of energy, inspiration, and material. Their work depends on and responds to the environments they inhabit, guiding the visual outcome of many pieces. Amanda uses their surroundings as a source of materials- trash picked up from the street, second-hand yarn and fabric, boxes of physical memories and forgotten things, or treasures foraged in the woods. This practice of intentional gathering and holding guides the timing and process of her work and allows the materials to act as a catalyst for creativity and exploration.

Join us for this inspiring night of creativity and connection!

Threads of Change  Workshop Series

Threads of Change explores the connection between nature and fiber design through large-scale installations that reveal how fiber arts tell stories, inspire change, and deepen our connection to the natural world.

To complement the exhibition, MODA will host hands-on workshops led by local artists, Kimani Johnson, Sayma Hossain, Camisha Butler, and Amanda Banks, whose work reflects these themes. Open to beginners and experienced makers alike, these workshops offer a chance to create, connect, and explore how fiber design can address environmental and social challenges.

The series concludes with a group discussion moderated by a guest from Atlanta’s design community. Join us to discover how fiber design inspires creativity and change!
