Description
Étienne de La Boétie was a beloved man—by his wife Marguerite, by Beatrice, who served the family and found kindness in him, and most famously, by his closest companion, Michel de Montaigne. Now, as Marguerite prepares to sell the Boétie estate, Michel, left to sort through Étienne’s library, is forced to confront the grief and moments of their past he’s long buried. As Michel wrestles with Étienne’s cryptic final words, “give me a place,” Étienne’s ghost—equal parts exasperating and endearing—steers him through fond memories, old arguments, and the messy work of mourning.
