Description

Discover how an Irish American from Long Island single-handedly popularized the pizza truck industry in Connecticut. "What’s Doug Got to Do with It? Everything!”, a conversation with Big Green Truck founder Doug Coffin, will take place on Thursday, March 12, at 6 pm, at the New Haven Museum (NHM). The talk is the latest offering in The Monthly Slice series of programs at NHM, presented in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition, “Pronounced Ah-Beetz.” Free with regular museum admission.

In 2003, Doug Coffin took a mobile catering idea and turned it into a fleet of wood-fired ovens on wheels, churning out some of the area’s best New Haven-style pizza and inspiring dozens of other pizza-truck companies. With the business going strong, Coffin retired but continues to be an influence on the pizza scene. Colin M. Caplan, co-curator of the New Haven Museum’s “Pronounced Ah-Beetz” exhibition, tour operator, author, historian and pizza guru, will join Coffin for this tasty conversation.

“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” includes first-hand oral histories and pizza-related artifacts from personal collections, video footage adapted from the documentary and photographs. The exhibition’s title comes from the way many people mispronounce the word apizza, which originally grew out of the Italian la pizza. The exhibition will remain on view through October 2027.
