Description

Remembrances of New Haven holidays past offer a rare look at what we all hold dear—family, friends, and a longing to be together—and just enough of a Dickens-related scandal to add a dash of holiday spice. During our next “What’s In the Whitney Library” program, Sat., Dec. 13, 2025, 12-4 p.m., visitors will view a charming collection of holiday treasure—from handmade Christmas cards from the early 1900s to greetings from overseas soldiers during WW1. They’ll also relish an astonishing article from the December, 24, 1950 New Haven Register, recounting Charles Dickens’s 1868 Elm City reading of the “Christmas Carol,” replete with rioting crowds and a ticketing scandal so colossal that the entire appearance was rescheduled and re-ticketed. In the end, Tiny Tim brought the “jammed to the rafters” New Haven crowd to tears. Don’t miss this special viewing of treasured memories from generations of former New Haveners in “Holiday History in New Haven.”

Also that day, at 2 p.m., visitors will gather in the New Haven Museum auditorium for a one-man performance of Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol,” performed by Michael Rose. In his 90-minute cut of the perennial holiday favorite, Rose embodies over a dozen characters, from Ebeneezer Scrooge to Tiny Tim to the three ghosts of Christmas. The free performance will be preceded by a reception at 1:30 p.m. Register here: https://qrco.de/bgSCvH

The Whitney Library in the New Haven Museum is open to anyone interested in the past of the city of New Haven. With tens of thousands of documents, books, and archives, the Whitney Library is the most expansive collection of New Haven texts in the city.
