What the Heck Just Happened - Now and Then:
Heather Cox Richardson with Joanne Freeman
Come celebrate our nation's 250th birthday by listening to this conversation between two leading American Historians - who also happen to be good friends with a popular weekly podcast! This conversation between two of the most influential American Historians at work in the US today will range across time, uncovering the historical context of where we are in contemporary America today, and exploring how we got here.
Heather Cox Richardson, professor of American History at Boston College, specializes in nineteenth-century American history, focusing on the transformations of political ideology in the post-Civil War period. Professor Richardson is the author of the New York Times bestseller Democracy Awakening, as well as a popular nightly newsletter, Letters from an American. Joanne Freeman is the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, and a leading historian of the politics and political culture of the Revolutionary era and early national periods of American history. Professor Freeman is known for her scholarship on Alexander Hamilton, and most recently authored The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to Civil War. Since April 2025 Heather and Joanne have hosted the live weekly podcast What the Heck Just Happened. Their first podcast, Now & Then, ran from 2021 until 2023.
Tickets for this fundraiser are $100. The evening program is a benefit, and all funds will go towards the ongoing restoration of the historic 1853 Greek Revival Round Pond Meetinghouse, the future home of Helping Hands.
