Description

The world's most heavily peated whisky.

First distilled in 2002; usually at 5 years of age. Created in response to people who were critical of Bruichladdich's lack of peat. Bruichladdich says Octomore challenges preconceptions and defies whisky wisdom. It's arguably the biggest middle finger in human history.

First in our linup is the current standard-bearer of the Octomore range; the 11.1. Aged entirely in ex-Bourbon American oak casks, and made from 100% Scottish barley.  The 11.1 will allow us to get our bearings on Bruichladdich's fruity and floral notes surrounded by the heavy curtain of Octomore's humongous peat levels without the added complexity that wine casks bring to the table.

Next in our lineup is Bruichladdich (former) Master DistillerJim McEwen's "what if" - the result of him taking the heavily peated excess malt that Bairds Maltings was going to throw away, and distilling it - just to see what it was like (the answer is bloody delicious!). Peated to 80.5ppm; nearly twice the peating level of the next most heavily peated whisky on the market at the time it was distilled - a far cry from Octomore 08.3 at 309ppm!

The rest of our lineup consists of 4 Travel Retail (i.e, Duty Free) Exclusive releases. With every vintage of Octomore, the "x.2" release is sold exclusively through duty free outlets in airports around the world - with the exception of the 11th series, which due to Covid-19 was sold through Bruichladdich's website. These whiskies are aged or finished in "alternate casks" - usually, but not always, wine casks.

As international travel in and out of Australia slowly starts to resume, we take a look back at some of the best travel whiskies from before the mayhem that is Covid threw curveballs through everybody's travel plans.
