We are excited to announce Maria Guerra Lapacek as our Keynote Speaker this year! We are honored to hear about Maria's journey as apart of the program this year.
Maria Guerra Lapacek was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue by Secretary Peter Barca in August 2022. She has served the department since April 2019 when she was appointed Assistant Deputy Secretary.
Immediately prior to joining the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, she served as the Director of the Mayor's Office of Legislative Counsel and Government Affairs for the City of Chicago. Deputy Secretary Guerra Lapacek held numerous high-level leadership positions in City government for two different Mayors. She served as Commissioner of the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, Deputy Director of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Budget Director of the Office of Budget and Management, Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Aviation. She started her career in City government as an Assistant to the Mayor in the Intergovernmental Affairs Office, working on legislation with the Chicago City Council.
Prior to her roles in government, she worked in the field of media and communications, serving as a press secretary for a member of Congress and as a local news producer for Telemundo in both Chicago and the San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland markets, and a PBS television show out of Washington, DC. In law school, she served as a law clerk for WTTW Channel 11, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Cook County States Attorney's office, as well as for Kraft Foods.
Deputy Secretary Guerra Lapacek has a bachelor's degree in communication. Additionally, she holds a JD/MBA from DePaul University. She is licensed to practice law in Illinois.
She is originally from Chicago, IL, and currently lives in Poynette, WI with her husband and two daughters.
