Description

Join the Women’s Museum of California and the San Diego History Center on August 24 at 4:00 PM to commemorate Women’s Equality Day with a special screening of the Documentary Fannie Lou Hamer’s America.

Attendees are invited to enjoy a reception before the film starts with light refreshments in the San Diego History Center’s Taste San Diego Craft and Culture.

The program will start with an introduction from the League of Women Voters San Diego on the history of voting rights.

Fannie Lou Hamer was a leader in the civil rights movement, founder of the Freedom Democratic Party in Mississippi, and the organizer of Freedom Summer, a volunteer-based campaign launched in the summer of 1964 in order to register as many Black voters in Mississippi as possible. Through public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist, Fannie Lou Hamer’s America explores and celebrates the lesser-known life of one of the Civil Rights Movement’s greatest leaders.
