Discover the art of Heidi’s Moroccan Mosaic quilt making from start to finish in this 2-day, completely hand-designed and hand-cut workshop. Explore shape, color, pattern, and symmetry or take a more playful, random approach as you create a one-of-a-kind 12" x 12" mosaic quilt tile that is uniquely yours.
You’ll begin by drawing your own geometric design and choosing a palette from a beautiful assortment of batik fabrics provided in class. I’ll guide you through preparing your fabrics, transferring your design, hand-cutting each individual mosaic piece, and puzzling it all together. Along the way, I’ll share some of my favorite mosaic-making tricks, including some surprising products from the art world that I’ve brought into my own mosaic quilt-making process.
On Day 2, we’ll focus on quilting and finishing. You’ll set up your sewing machine for free-motion quilting while learning about the threads, needles, and machine settings I use for mosaic quilting. I’ll demonstrate techniques for quilting those tiny individual pieces, maneuvering around small shapes, adding texture, and beautifully finishing your tile.
The best part? No two tiles will be alike! And the possibilities don’t stop with one tile. We’ll explore how your original design can grow into a larger quilt and watch the magic happen as tiles are repeated, rotated, and placed side by side, revealing beautiful and unexpected secondary patterns.

Sewing Machine & Free-Motion Quilting Supplies
Please Note: Students should have good working knowledge of their sewing machine, including how to set it up for free-motion quilting and how to do basic stippling or meandering.

Small, sharp fine-tip scissors
Fully wound bobbin with 80 or 100 weight polyester thread in a color that blends with the quilt backing. In most cases, medium gray works well. Wonderfil’s DecoBob works wonderfully.
One extra empty bobbin
Fine sewing machine needles, size 70/10 or 75/11
Recommended needle options include: Microtex/Sharp needles, Organ needles, Janome Blue Tip needles, Schmetz Super NonStick needles, Schmetz Black Super Fine needlesQuilting gloves
Free-motion quilting Teflon slider mat
Sewing machine extension table (optional, but helpful)
Sewing machine manual (always a good idea to bring)
Additional Supplies for Finishing & Binding
These items will be used for finishing and binding the quilt in class if time permits, or later at home.
Standard zigzag presser foot and standard needle plate
Straight pins or quilt clips
80/12 standard sewing machine needle
40–50 weight polyester or cotton thread in a color that matches the binding (usually medium gray)
Hand-sewing needle for tacking the binding
Heidi Proffetty is a nationally recognized mosaic art quilter, quilting and sewing educator. Known for her distinctive mosaic quilting style, Heidi combines her own original digital artwork with innovative quilt-making techniques. She shares both digital and traditional mosaic quilt making techniques with fellow quilters through classes & retreats, publications, and online platforms.
Her unique artistry and teaching expertise have been featured in American Quilter Magazine, Quilting Arts Magazine, and Patchwork Professional, as well as on Quilting Arts TV and The Quilt Show. She is a former contributor to Janome Sewing Machine’s Maker/Artisan program, where she regularly shared free sewing and quilting projects, many of which are still available on her website.
Heidi lives in Massachusetts and when she’s not designing or teaching, she enjoys spending time with her two daughters, flying with her husband, relaxing by the ocean, baking, and beekeeping.

Workshop FAQs
What are the times of the workshop?
This workshop is Friday -Saturday. Class runs 9:00am - 4:00pm. Students must be out of the classrooms when the Museum closes at 5:00 pm.
On Friday evening, we offer you the option to stay until 7:00 pm and work on your project or visit the Museum galleries.
How many people will be in the workshop?
We can accommodate up to 20 students per workshop – each student having use of one 3’x6’ table. Irons and ironing boards are provided by NQM, and shared by all participants.
Can I use a NQM sewing machine?
Yes, we have Janome 6700 sewing machines available at no cost. Please note this choice during the registration process.
When can I bring in my supplies?
You may unload materials between 1:00-4:30 pm on the day before the workshop begins.
Where do I park?
Loading and unloading materials can be done from the Museum parking lot. We have several flatbed carts available if you need help bringing materials inside. Once you’ve unloaded, please park in the municipal parking lot located on 2nd Street behind the Museum during class hours if you’re able (near the Farmer’s Market Stand). All parking is free.
How do I get into the Museum?
Please use the Main Entrance to the Museum. The automatic-accessible door will be unlocked each morning starting at 8:30am for you to enter the building.
What about lunch?
Lunch break is an hour and timed at the instructor’s discretion. There are a variety of restaurants within walking distance of the Museum that are open for lunch and dinner.
Can I bring my own food?
Bottled water, coffee and hot water will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own tea bags, drinks, K-cups or snacks for your own table.
Do I have to pay admission to the Museum?
No! As a workshop participant your admission to the galleries is included. If you are a Friend of NQM you also receive a 20% discount on all purchases in the Gift Shop.
Refund Policy
If you have to cancel more than 30 days before the workshop, NQM will issue a full refund.
If you have to cancel within 30 days of the workshop, NQM will issue a refund for the class amount minus a $100 deposit.
If NQM has to cancel the workshop for any reason, participants will receive a full refund.
Please note, workshop/class tickets are non-transferrable.
