Description

Beginning, Saturday, June 21, 2025. This is a group discussion following the regular weekly sitting practice which will take place one Saturday each month. Our usual 2 hour meditation practice will be shorter to allow for the hour long discussion.

On Saturday, June 21, our first discussion will be centered around Hakuin’s classic poem, Song of Zazen.

Hakuin is a seminal figure in our tradition of Rinzai Zen. In Song of Zazen, the 17th century Japanese Zen master offers fundamental teachings through rich imagery that, in turns, celebrates our Buddha nature, inspires and exhorts us to recognize it, and laments our searching outside ourselves to find it.

Line by line, we’ll explore the tapestry woven, and talk through how it might relate to our own practice. Join us! Link to the poem.

Adjusted practice schedule for this date:

10-11 AM: tea ceremony, chanting, sitting and walking meditation

11-12 AM: dharma dialogue

***

Arrive 5 minutes before start to select your mediation seating. The Jiki will lead a practice of sitting and walking meditation in the Rinzai Zen format.

The practice opens with traditional Japanese tea service followed by chanting The Heart Sutra in both Japanese and English. Closing chant is The Eight Verses of Training the Mind. Candles and incense are used.

Please come early if you would like any instruction or assistance.
