Description
Join Sonoma Ecology staff on this approximately 2-mile fire recovery hike. Starting at the main parking lot, we'll head up the continual incline of Lower Bald Mt Trail, twice burned in the last six years. We will be assessing the burned vegetation of chaparral and oak woodland, learning how to interpret fire-affected landscapes and discussing why it happened and how to prepare for it happening again. We return down a rough, paved, continually descending road.
Tickets are $10-$15 sliding scale for general audiences and free for children under 12. Meet at the White Barn parking lot, ½ past the entrance kiosk. Please wear sturdy footwear and sun protection, bring at least a quart of water, and if desired, a snack. Trekking poles recommended, if you use them. Parking fees apply.
Ease of access: The main parking lot has one van-designated, accessible parking spot and an accessible vault toilet. The Lower Bald Mt Trail from the main parking lot starts out as a single-track, compressed gravel and dirt trail, with steps and switchbacks. It is nearly a mile long with approximately 700ft of elevation. Stern Rd is a roughly-paved fire road with 80% sun exposure.
